Utah Highway Patrol Selected Sierra Wireless to Enhance Security at 2002 Winter Games

Athletes provided extra security with wireless data and GPS technology

Vancouver, BC - February 26, 2002 - Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSE: SW) announced today that its MP200 GPS wireless modem was chosen by the Utah Highway Patrol to enhance security efforts during the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The wireless solution was selected to increase safety and efficiency, and for its superior design.

Sierra Wireless products were installed by the Utah Highway Patrol in 453 specially designed vans and buses used to transport athletes from Athletes" Village to sporting events throughout the Games. The vehicles were outfitted with Sierra Wireless MP200 GPS (Global Positioning System) modems and a CompassCom AVL system, which enabled security personnel to closely monitor the location of vehicles, and ensure they were on schedule and on-track with pre-determined transportation routes. The result was enhanced transportation safety for the athletes and an efficient security system for the Utah Highway Patrol.

"The safety and security of the athletes and fans at the 2002 Winter Games was our highest priority," said Lt. Jim Matthies, Utah Highway Patrol. "Sierra Wireless has been key to providing our officers with the support they demand in the field since 1997 and this new application has been ideal for meeting our unique security requirements.
